AWS vs Azure Certifications: Which Path Fits Your Goals?
By Testara Team

AWS and Microsoft Azure both offer certifications, but the right starting point depends on the platform, role, and experience you want to build. Market-share percentages and generic salary tables do not answer that personal question.
Use each provider’s current catalog as the source of truth: AWS Certification and Microsoft Credentials. Individual exams and role paths change, so verify the code and scope again before purchasing study materials.
Compare the Platforms in Context
Start with the technology used by your employer, clients, school, or target roles. If you already support Microsoft identity, Windows, Microsoft 365, or Azure workloads, an Azure path may let you apply study immediately. If you design, develop, or operate AWS workloads, an AWS path may be more relevant.
Do not treat this as a permanent industry split. Organizations can use both providers, and job requirements vary by region, company, and team.
Check your actual market
Review a dated sample of job descriptions for the role and location you want. Record which cloud platform, certification, and hands-on experience each one requests. This evidence is more useful than an unattributed global market-share number.
Compare Certification Models
AWS
AWS groups current credentials into categories such as Foundational, Associate, Professional, and Specialty. The categories do not form a mandatory ladder: AWS recommends experience based on the exam, while training is not mandatory.
AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner validates foundational cloud literacy. Role-based associate credentials cover work such as solution design or application development. Read the target-candidate section of the current exam guide instead of assuming one credential is a prerequisite for another.
Microsoft
Microsoft offers Fundamentals, role-based, specialty, and Applied Skills credentials. Azure Fundamentals covers cloud concepts, Azure architecture and services, and Azure management and governance. It is a common starting point, but it is not a required first step for every Microsoft credential.
Microsoft distinguishes certifications from shorter, scenario-based Applied Skills credentials. Compare the assessment and renewal model on the current credential page.
Renewal and Retirement
AWS states that its certifications are valid for three years. Microsoft says Fundamentals certifications do not expire, while role-based and specialty certifications have their own renewal policies. Those policies and individual exams can change; use the provider page rather than a fixed table copied into an article.
Start from a Role
Ask what work you want to demonstrate:
| Goal | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Cloud literacy | Do I need vendor terminology and basic concepts, or hands-on role skills? |
| Administration | Which platform will I configure, govern, monitor, and troubleshoot? |
| Development | Which SDKs, deployment workflows, and managed services will I use? |
| Architecture | Which provider’s design framework and services appear in my work? |
| Security | Is the role platform-specific, vendor-neutral, technical, or governance-focused? |
Then compare the exam’s target candidate, task statements, and recommended experience with your baseline.
Compare Learning Resources and Costs
Both providers maintain primary learning resources:
- AWS Skill Builder and AWS exam guides;
- Microsoft Learn and Microsoft study guides;
- official practice questions or assessments where the provider offers them;
- cloud documentation and architecture guidance.
Cloud labs can incur charges. Review current free-tier or account terms, create budgets, and remove resources when an exercise ends.
Exam prices vary by level and sometimes by country or currency. Compare the current registration price, taxes, possible retakes, training, lab usage, and renewal requirements. Do not choose a path from an old fixed-price table.
Make the Decision
- Select a role, not just a vendor.
- Collect current local job requirements.
- Compare your baseline with current exam guides.
- Choose the credential whose scope closes a real gap.
- Pair study with a small project or work task you can explain.
- Recheck the exam code and policies before scheduling.
You can learn both platforms over time, but collecting fundamentals badges without a use case is not automatically more valuable than building depth in one relevant environment.
Conclusion
Neither AWS nor Azure guarantees a career or compensation outcome. Choose the path that matches real systems and target-role responsibilities, confirm the current credential scope with the provider, and use practical work to turn the syllabus into evidence you can discuss.
